    Zantel rolls out Lipa kwa Simu to digitize payment in Zanzibar

    In a quest to digitize payments, Zantel has today unveiled its enhanced Lipa kwa Simu service that will allow customers to pay for goods and services direct from their mobile wallet. The service will fuel the digitization process in the Islands expecting to boost economy in major sectors as well as consumer goods. Speaking during the Launch the Zantel’s Chief Finance Officer, Aziz Said Ali said the move will help to improve efficiency for both small- and large-scale businesses while offering more security for money. “This service is going to digitize payment gateways in Zanzibar as now customers will purchase anything and pay direct from their mobile wallet to merchants. This is a more secure way for both customers and merchants as it eliminates the need to handle cash,” he said. The company is the first mover in providing a full-fledged digital payment platform that allows customer to pay from any network in the Island. “We have more than 2,000 merchants who have registered to use Lipa kwa Simu service in Unguja and Pemba and we are continuing to onboard more merchants. We are ensuring that this service is available in many outlets to reach many people,” he said. Launching the service roll out in the market, Aziz added that the service will help in the transformation of major economic sectors in the country. The government of Zanzibar is now implementing the Blue Economy agenda that focuses on commercializing water resources. With this service, business will become much easier and reliable which will boost business volume in the long run. The Head of Zantel Mobile Financial Services, Moses Alphonce said the service is easier to use and the company is taking deliberate efforts to educate customers to simplify adaptation process as for now cashless business is the new norm. “To pay via Lipa kwa Simu all you need to do is go to your Mobile money USSD of your respective network and choose Lipa kwa Simu and then follow the process. For smartphone users can easily pay via Ezypesa App by scanning the QR code available at the merchant outlet,” he said. Ezpesa users can dial *150*02# choose 5 Lipa kwa Simu then press 1 -Lipa kwa Ezypesa then enter Lipa Namba (available at the Merchant) then amount and confirm by entering your password. The service is already available in all outlets including restaurants, hotels, markets like Darajani, Shops, Supermarkets, pharmacies, and open areas like Forodhani. Another unique factor about the service is that it does not include extra charges, making it affordable to everyone.
